It seems incredible that something so vital for skin health is new, but it is true. Photoprotection did not “exist” before. Blisters, burns, and excessive sun tanning were the norm, and were even reported as anecdotes. “As a child, I was burned so badly that I couldn't sleep because of the pain… my mother put cornstarch on me.” We called it casual.
Now, the public is beginning to know and become aware. Prolonged exposure to the sun causes not only burns, but skin cancer, premature aging, spots, and deep wrinkles. In the case of melanoma cancer, the numbers are chilling: Worldwide, it is estimated that 324,635 people were diagnosed with melanoma in 2020. Of those, 2,400 cases occurred in women between 15 and 29 years old. In the United States alone, it is estimated that approximately 7,990 people (5,420 men and 2,570 women) will die from melanoma.
But enough of the scares, and let's get to what's important. Which to choose? I leave you some of my favorite options:
- Avéne Cleanance Solar SPF 50+: Always innovating, last year Avéne launched its new line of complete sun protection on the market. After many years of research, Avéne patented the TriAsorB filter, which also protects against high-energy blue light. This filter is suitable for all skin types, but is best on combination skin.
- Eucerin Sun Oil Control 50+: A favorite of many of my patients for its affordable price and feel on the skin, this sunscreen mattifies immediately without leaving a white residue. You can choose it without color, in light or medium tone. Ideal for oily or acne-prone skin.
- La Roche Posay Anthelios UV Fluid Mune 50+: The new UV Mune line from La Roche Posay contains its patented Mexoryl filter, which effectively protects against ultra-long UVA rays from 380 nm, which represent up to 30% of UV rays. The texture is very fluid, so it spreads easily over the entire face. I love applying it, and before it dries, apply a little translucent powder. My skin has a beautiful “glowy” appearance.
- Avene Ultra Mat with Color: Are you in a hurry every morning? With this product you have protection and a touch of makeup instantly. Its light texture is easy to distribute, and its finish is smooth and mattifying. It also has TriAsorB technology for maximum protection. Ideal for combination skin.
- Eucerin Sun Hydro Fluid 50+: The new launch from Eucerin has only been on the market for 4 weeks and is already one of my favorites. Flowing texture? Check. Delicious smell? Check. Does it moisturize without greasing? Check. No doubts. Prove it now. Ideal for combination to oily skin.
- Vichy Capital Soleil Matifying 3 in 1: What 3 in 1 means: protects, matifies, and purifies. Contains green clay to instantly mattify and control sebum during the day. It contains broad-spectrum sun protection, and its probiotics and volcanic water act as anti-pollution substances for the skin. I love the silky and mattified touch it leaves. Ideal for combination skin.
- ISDIN Fusion Water 50+: A veteran protector that is still valid. ISDIN developed water fusion technology, which ensures ultra-light, easy-to-apply, and mattifying protection. I love that it comes in 4 presentations: no color, light color, medium and bronze. There is no excuse. Ideal for oily skin.
- SVR Sun Secure Blur: The SVR brand has quickly gained ground thanks to its incredible assets and textures. The sun secure is a mousse cream with an optical blurring effect, which instantly melts into the skin and becomes invisible for a bare skin effect. Imperfections are blurred, the complexion is smoothed and unified, and the skin appears velvety. It is also respectful of the marine environment! Ideal for combination to oily skin.
- Cetaphil daily facial moisturizer SPF 50+: Do you want to use just one product in the morning? This is ideal for you. Formulated with micronized titanium dioxide that absorbs quickly and leaves no white residue. Nourishes to retain skin's vital moisture throughout the day. It is perfect for dry to normal and sensitive skin.
And to reapply?
Any sunscreen is good to reapply throughout the day, but if you prefer not to have to use your hands (maybe you don't have anywhere to wash them), these two are my favorites.
- ISDIN Mineral Brush: A versatile brush, the perfect size for your bag, and with a mattifying action. Apply this powder all over your face and enjoy its protection and finish with a touch of color. Ideal for oily skin.
- La Roche Posay Anthelios Mist: More than a spray, this ultra-light mist leaves a feeling of freshness, without being sticky. Ideal for normal to combination skin.
